The gene-deletor technology can be used to produce non-GM edible parts from GM crops, thus providing an effective tool to address the safety concerns over foods from GM crops
The gene-deletor technology could be used to generate non-transgenic edible parts from transgenic plants such as non-transgenic seeds, fruits, tubers, leaves or flowers to mitigate consumer concerns over the presence of transgenes and their products in food. For example, with a fruit-specific gene promoter to drive the FLP gene expression, all transgenes in fruits should be deleted and all GM gene products in fruits will then disappear. If the gene-deletor technology is used in grain crops, it might eliminate the need for labeling and physical separation of transgenic from non-transgenic grains after harvest.
